This is the American BLU-97 (Bomb Live Unit), a cylindrical-shaped high-explosive (HE) dual-purpose shaped-charge submunition with a conical-shaped cloth Air Inflated Decelerator (AID). It is designed for use against armored targets such as tanks or APCs and unprotected personnel in the open. The submunition's outer body is sheet steel painted bright yellow. The steel inner fragmentation sleeve is internally grooved to produce optimum fragmentation. The fabric Air Inflated Decelerator (AID) is cloth and is either white or olive green in color. The BLU-97 is designed to function on direct impact with a hard target but there is a secondary inertia impact mechanism, which functions if the submunition hits the soft ground. It is used in the CBU-87 dispenser, which houses 202 BLU-97 and the AGM-154 JSOW which houses 145 BLU-97 submunitions.
